Why did you choose the apprentice programme at JMK?

I was an existing employee with JMK having originally started as a law graduate in the Legal Admin Team and progressed on to Legal Executive from there.

Many of my colleagues had already gone through the programme so I knew they felt well-supported and they had indicated that the practical experience gained in JMK made their studies at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies more beneficial and allowed them to adapt more readily to the professional course requirements.

What have you learnt?

I have had the benefit to learn and build on strong communication and interpersonal skills which has really helped me to place my client’s needs at the core of any advice and direction I take in a case. I think in a world where technology is pushing us into areas of being more impersonal these are skill sets that are harder to develop and sustain.

Benefits to the apprentice programme at JMK?

While undertaking your studies at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies you are given the space and time to focus on engaging with the professional programme. When you return to the office there is a real encouragement to ask questions to build on your apprenticeship training and all my colleagues at JMK offer great support and advice.

What would you want a law student to know about working at JMK?

JMK provides you with the tools to gain real practical experience that will remain at the heart of the foundation of your legal career. It is an innovative firm that is dedicated to proactively identifying, addressing, and navigating through the ever-changing legal landscape.

It was well poised to seamlessly continue to act for our clients when lockdown hit with all staff having work-from-home equipment and already being a paperless office.

How would you describe the culture at JMK

There is a keen focus on approachability, and JMK’s open plan working spaces allow admin support staff and directors to sit together to assist each other and gain from each other’s experience. As a mum of 2 young children, it is very encouraging to work in a company where they are actively working to move away from the culture where you are expected to work all hours and are afforded the flexibility to raise your family without compromising your career opportunities.
